Putting together a volleyball league sports friends team in the city is a wonderful experience. There’s nothing more fun that getting the band together, doing battle and going out for drinks afterwards. For that matter, you can go out before the game, but I recommend you all agree to play DOWN a level if this is a regular thing (go recreational).
So, the big questions, how do I acquire enough volleyball friends to forge a team?
Development of a friends group around here starts in the leagues and the Meetups (meetup.com). It’s super easy to get involved in these groups and make friends quickly.
I would advise the following:
- Know your level of play – If you play up and can’t deliver in a group, it’s hard to attract friends to play with. There in an innate desire among us all to win (fortunately/unfortunately) and this can be a source of problems as you begin your NYC volleyball journey.
- Join a league now – If you are new to the city and want to get started, join a sports league. Most league sports in NYC offer clearly defined levels of play.
- Join as a Free-Agent and make volleyball friends! – It’s a mixed bag when you join as a free-agent. You could get placed on a team where you skill level far exceeds that of your team mates. In this case, you connect with those at your level and maybe create a new more competitive team. If you end up on a team with a much higher level, work hard to integrate but be honest and explain that you are learning and will take advise. This experience is about the best you could ask for if the teammates accept you, you get to learn and are given feedback in the process.
- Join various meetups – There are a lot of meetups (meetup.com) in the city, some are free and others cost per session. Some of these are very recreational level others are intermediate. Make sure you know which is which before showing up or paying for the session. Some more strict groups will ask you not to return if it is not readily apparent to you.
